I really enjoyed reading Hooper Finds a Family, A Hurricane Katrina Dog's Survival Tale to my children. Hooper is endearing, funny and overall a survivor. Hooper is a spunky dog whose warm spirit and goofy personality are charming and irresistible.
I found this book to be heart touching since it was based on a true story and written to be Hooper's experience from being left homeless from Hurricane Katrina to his journey to find a new family. He tells of the terrifying force of Katrina, his trials in the shelter, and being the new dog on the block in a city far from home.
I found this to be a refreshing point of view from the tragic events of Hurricane Katrina. Many animals were left behind, but I had never sat down and thought about how it actually was for all the animals.
Another great aspect of this book is that some of the proceedings from the book will go to Labs4rescue, an organization that matches stray dogs with new families.
Jane Paley adopted Hooper through Labs4rescue. Today, Jane brings Hooper, a certified therapy dog, to visit patients in hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, and physical therapy centers, to bring joy and comfort to those in need. Hooper is also involved in the reading for buddies program which matches dogs with young children learning to read.
I found this story of a dog left during Hurricane Katrina to be a overwhelming story of strength, courage and love. I highly recommend reading this book not only for yourself but for your children. It will teach them an underlying lesson of how to be strong in times where you are down.
